Call Of the wild
| Aranyam 2006 explores the various threats that India's ecology faces |
The Unwind Center in Koramangala is hosting Aranyam 2006, a wildlife film festival from October 3 to 5.
The festival, being conducted to mark the occasion of Wildlife Week, features a variety of films that look at different aspects of Indian ecology and wildlife. The festival will mark the world premiere of Suresh Heblikar's The Great Indian Bustard. Sandesh Kadur's Sahyadris: Mountains of the Monsoon, follows the wildlife of these mountains, from the peaks of the High Ranges to the thick shola to the dry deciduous forests at the foothills of the mountains; The Silent Valley-Only An Axe Away by P. Baburaj and C. Saratchandran is the story of a unique campaign to save the valley from destructive development.
K.P. Sasi's The Wings of Kokkrebellur is a film on the conservation values of the villagers of Kokkrebellur, Karnataka, who protect painted storks and grey pelicans as a part of their ongoing culture and life. Surabhi Sharma's The Turtle People tells the story of the Turtle People of North Kerala fighting for the survival of an Olive Ridley Turtle nesting beach while their own survival is threatened by the sinking of their village due to the erosion of the shore from sand mining activity in their estuary. The 18th Elephant by P. Balan, a powerful critique of modern man's mercenary attitude towards nature and his anthropocentric conception of development. The festival also features films from Pakistan and Sri Lanka, along with local amateur documentary films. During the festival, there will be a panel discussion featuring Sandesh Kadur, K.P. Sasi and Suresh Heblikar.
There will also be a wildlife photo exhibition by a variety of artistes such as Sandesh Kadur, Raam and so on, besides stalls and displays by organisations such as Kalamadhyam, which showcases tribal art and handicrafts from over 250 Villages in Karnataka and other States and the World Wildlife Fund.
The festival takes place between October 3 and 5 at Unwind Center. For more details, contact 25436319 or 98866 22139 or log onto www.actnow.co.in.
